This particular visit resulted in a good discussion although with a rather confused American who seems paranoid about the "totalitarian christians" running her country. She also thinks that the President of the United States is an equal threat to her as are Middle Eastern mullahs.

Congress passed the "Patriot Act" in the name of security. When Dubya's domestic-spying program was revealed, Americans were told, once again, that the government did what it had to do to keep us secure.

Hell, Bushites continue to justify the invasion of Iraq -which had nothing to do with September 11th- as part of its war on terrorism.

But now, in an act that would seemingly send the terror alerts off the charts, the White House has approved an almost $7 billion deal that would place the nation's most critical ports in the hands of an Arab state with known ties to the September 11th hijackers. And just today? Today the White House tells us that Dubya had no knowledge of this deal 'till it hit the news. Is that supposed to make us feel better, or worse about our Stammerer in Chief?

Yeah... so much for national security.

For years, security experts have complained that our nation's seaports are the most vulnerable, and yet least protected, areas when it comes to national security. America's ports handle 2 billion tons of freight each year, according to the Investor's Business Daily, but only 5 percent (that's 100,000,000. Thanks Google!) of containers are inspected upon arrival.

But rather than strengthening port security, the Treasury Department's Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (say that five times fast!) has approved a deal that would grant management of the ports in New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Miami, Baltimore and New Orleans to Dubai Ports World. Dubai is a small state included in the United Arab Emirates, where much of the operations and finances for al Qaeda were based pre-September 11th.

If Dubya refuses to stop the deal, Congress must step in to ensure that the threat of terrorism that our government has repeatedly warned us about is not something that, in this case, it helped to import. Honestly, when did it become Congress' job to stand by and let the Executive Branch run roughshod over the needs of the nation, and hopes of the world? Why do we tolerate a Chief Executive who clearly sees Congress as "quaint?"

Seems to me, a President truly interested in bipartisan cooperation and the good of the nation would -instead of using his first veto on such a boneheaded cause- make the bill unnecessary by, oh I don't know... acting on his own to undo the ports deal.

Despite what the Hannitys and Coulters will tell you, Congress is right to resist the ports deal. The United Arab Emirates is an ally, sure, but its record in the war on terror is mixed at best. It is not irrational or "politicking" for the United States to resist putting port operations, arguably the most vulnerable part of our security infrastructure, under that country's control. Mary, Mary! Under any other country's control! It's the same reason I don't let my sister warehouse my comics in her garage: they don't mean half as much to her; why would I expect her to take the same care of them that I would?

Finally, what just knocks me on my ass about this situation is that Dubyaco has never hesitated to sacrifice individual rights in favor of "security," but it has been loath to do the same thing when it comes to business interests.

Why do we keep putting up with this? We're smarter than that... right?

It seems up to now people have been railing against Bush for doing too much and using and engineered threat to get his agenda passed.

It is refreshing to see people railing against Bush because of a seemingly recent recognition that there really IS a War Against Worldwide Terrorism and that Bush is now not doing enough to secure the United States. I have just seen too many demonstrations with signs saying that Bush manufactured the terrorist threat, to take too seriously a protest against Bush for not doing enough to secure America from an Arab nation.

While I do think it is foolish for any country to contract out its ports or its security, it seems strange that those who were against racial profiling at airports are now all for racial profiling on port contracts.

Excellent straw man! Of course no one outside the fringes thinks Bushco manufactured the terrorist threat or is doing “too much” to protect us, but that certainly is a better ploy than the “people don’t need to worry about security” line the prez is currently sputtering.

And Bubbe? The problem with an Arab nation with a dicey antiterrorist record controlling our port security isn’t the “Arab” part, it’s the “dicey antiterrorist record” part. Duh.

I have thought the "dicey antiterrorist record" part has been true in American business dealings around the world for some time even prior to the first World Trade Center attack of 1993 and how slow the United States has reacted to security threats that were obviously developing.

I still find it strange that groups opposed to racially profiling Arabs getting on airplanes are now hellfire and damnation for racially profiling and making generalities about countries or regions. I am all for the change of heart. I agree with the "dicey antiterrorist record" part but I don't think there should be a double standard between the micro and the macro levels as you seem to be advocating. I think there really is a real threat to Western Civilization here and not just the United States. I also see the United States as the only Western country capable and willing to take a stand against said threat. The bulwark of Western Civilization is the United States because unfortunately we in the "Mother Country" have already handed most of our freedoms to the nanny state.

I is not up to Governments to be the defenders of freedom...it is the People.

I admire the fire I see in you being against the United Arab Emirates purchase of your ports. Like I said, I find it refreshing. I just hope that the same fire spreads to other areas of security against the biggest threat to Western Civilization since Communism. I applaud the fact that you recognize the threat posed against you. Stay focused on protesting the threat to your country and stop protesting a president that will never again even be up for re-election.

“Bubbe” is a Yiddish term of endearment. I was trying to get the condescension level right to match that in your posts.

I appreciate that you note that I am correct in my assessment of UAE’s antiterrorist record. It is a shame you failed to understand my profound repulsion at racial profiling of any sort, and the fact that race it has nothing to do with my opposition to this Bushco ports deal.

There IS a threat to Western Civilization, of course, from religious totalitarians of every stripe who seek to curtail personal freedoms and do not hesitate to use violence and enslave women in the name of their beliefs.

And as you point out, the people must defend freedom, so you must certainly be anxious to defend it from that very threat by joining me in protesting this president, who has ample opportunity to further dismantle my personal freedoms and the freedoms that this country was founded on in his two and a half more years in office.

The fact that you as a woman are writting and expressing freely on this blog is proof that you are not as repressed as you would be if the mysoginistic Islamics were in charge. I am merely stating that your protest against your president is a waste of time and that you should focus your energies on protesting the enemy and threat to your country. From personal experience, your personal freedoms have not been dismantled nearly to the extent that me and my countrymen have. The most destructive thing to personal freedom in Britain has been the handing over of freedoms in exchange for dependence on the Government. If you value your freedom, be independent and fight any effort of your government to socialized medicine or welfare...or anything. Any government big enough to give you anything is big enough to take anything away.

Keep up the good fight and protest the intolerance of Islam on EVERY front, not just this port sale.

If you believe the mullahs and your president are equal threats to your wellbeing, you have not traveled much. If protesting religion is your fancy, that makes my point that you are less threatened by doing so in any Western country than you are virtually anywhere else. I myself am not religious, but I do not relish living in any society where there is not a higher arbiter than man. Societies in which there is no authority but man, result in human rights tragedies like Nazi Germany, Communist China, Pol Pot's Cambodia, Saddam's Iraq and any number of examples of totalitarian mass murder. Philosophically, I would much rather live in a christian country than a muslim one.
There are basically three groups of people in Western countries. The first group is dependent on government for assistance and think that government can do no wrong and who want more government dependency. The second group works to make ends meet and also to provide for those dependent on government but they don't have the time to be really involved in creating change. The third group is the small group of wealth people who don't need to work for money but have money working for them. The third group is divided between those who want more power and subvert those dependent on government and those who want more wealth.
In the rest of the world there are basically only two groups. The small group with the biggest bat who are the haves and the rest who are subjugated and are the have nots.

If you cannot identify the merits of Western Civilization over the rest of the world, again you have not traveled much. The fact that you can criticize your government (or me) freely using technology that is the direct result of the freedoms and opportunities found in Western Civilization is proof of its superiority.

You speak of being ill but being cured. Do you think that the medical technology which saved you happened "miraculously" out of thin air. If you think that the prosperity in the West happened by accident you are more of a mystic than the christians who you accuse of putting a gun to your head. I don't think you really know what totalitarianism is if you think christian totalitarians are running your country. That makes me think that you are fringe enough to be in the group accusing Bush of manufacturing the terrorist threat which is housed in a region you don't want owning your home country's ports.

Freedom of speech means exactly the right to say whatever one will, without fear of death or dismemberment. The reaction shown by the Muslim community has shown an inability to interact with Western Civilization. There are plenty of examples of absolutely abominable depictions of all the figures you mention above created by atheists and people of all religions. The difference is the reaction of the people offended. I am offended by many things but no more so than by men motivated by mysticism to riot and kill over mere caricatures of their master.
Any religion above question is suspect and is more suspect than Islam which refuses to enter into debate but instead immediately turns to violence and threats of violence. Although religion has obviously impacted Western Civilization, the greatest leaps of mankind have been when reason prevails. Islam and the countries dominated by it are unreasonable.

I think the best solution would be a society that once again instills discipline and respect in the youth for their elders. As of this writing no major newspaper in Britain has published the cartoons; the BBC has shown them only fleetingly and other networks have shied away. All have decided not to give you this critical information, without which no intelligent person can construct an informed and intelligent position on the matter. You're on your own.

The reasons given are conventional enough: the press doesn't want to inflame matters further; the cartoons are indeed offensive, and no editor has to publish images that would appal readers; reprinting would merely play into the hands of extremists, and so on.

The one argument you haven't heard is the one you hear off-camera. Many editors simply don't want to put their staffs at risk of physical danger. They have "offended" Muslims in the past and learnt to regret it. In New York the editors of a free alternative paper, the New York Press, decided they wanted to run the cartoons so their readers could have a grasp of what this huge story is about. The owner refused. The staff quit en masse. The editor claims the owner gave him a simple explanation: "I'm not putting lives in danger. We're not getting things blown up."

The whole cartoon mania from the World of Islamics looks like an intentional "blogstorm" without a blog, created by the Fascist Islamics. In the article crafted by The Belmont Club, one is wafted with the sense that Geopolitics generated by Syria was, if not the motorcycle driving the Mohammed cartoon madness, then at least the sidecar benefiting from the momentum. This "non-blogstorm" has fulfilled aspirations for the state of Syria and in fact the entire "Global Islamic Movement".

If one were inclined, one could not find a better "storm" to get the greater populations of Islamic coutries to do what they do best...kill infidels and destroy Western symbols.

How can one pass fleetingly on the idea that the whole Muhammend cartoon fiasco was created by a few imams from Denmark, sponsored on a traveling "meet and greet" tour by the usual suspects of state sponsored terrorism...Syria and Iran.

Sir, I applaud the BBC’s news treatment of the Danish cartoons (report, Feb 4). On its website, however, the cultural cringe is evident and double standards obtain. In its history of Islam we read: “One night in 610 he (Muhammad) was meditating in a cave on the mountain when he was visited by the angel Jibreel who ordered him to “recite” . . . words which he came to understand were the words of God.” This is written as fact, no “it is said” or “Muhammad reported”. Whenever Muhammad’s name is mentioned the BBC adds “Peace be upon him”, as if the corporation itself were Muslim.

How different, and how much more accurate, when we turn to Christianity. Here, Jesus’ birth “is believed by Christians to be the fulfilment of prophesies in the Jewish Old Testament”; Jesus “claimed that he spoke with the authority of God”; accounts of his resurrection appearances were “put about by his believers”.

I hear people in the Antique Media say that they don't know what Iran's intent is with its nuclear program. If we had the opportunity to destroy Nazi Germany's war machine, wouldn't we have done it? Oh, wait, we did have the opportunity, only Chamberlain tried to appease Hitler. With that historical perspective...for what are we waiting?

Iran's madman leader is already subjugating Iran's populace with an oppressive theocratic dictatorship. The people of Iran are clearly afraid of their government and this is what happens when a government is unchecked by its people. Re-read the masthead of this weblog.

Gun Control Has Failed Britain

I believe fully that a free society will only stay that way if it is an armed society. Since World War 2, the Government has been hell bent to eliminate the ability of law abiding and sane adults to own or posses firearms.

Many of you weak minded Government dependent sods have been conditioned to think that individual citizens have no right to armed self-defence...or any self-defence for that matter. That is why we now have many people who defend themselves after multiple assaults or robberies going to jail for the simple act of self-defence even when they do not use a firearm.

Many would say that if guns were legal and easily accessible that criminals would find it easier to obtain firearms. Guess what fellow subject of the Crown...the criminals already have guns!

For those that would say that guns don't deter crime here are hundreds of examples from our American cousins. Think of the thousands of cases when a gun is used to prevent a crime that are never reported.

There was a time as recent as the early 1900's when it was considered a sin tantamount to suicide if one did not use all means possible to defend one's self from and attack on his person or family. Sadly, now most Britons cower, call for assistance and die.

The Scotsman reports that pressure is mounting on Metropolitan Police to take action against Islamic extremeist protesters with signs advocating violence.

Why is it that the Police have to be pressured to act against those who threaten Western Civilization but the Police very easily respond with violence to protests to support Western Civilization. Something is seriously wrong here.

The Government clearly fears the WRONG people! The Government has incrementally taken the ability of the People to fight for themselves. Now people are disarmed and dependent on Government's socialist teat. The People depend on Government to defend them and thus have become indefencible.
